High‐performance electrolytes are one of the keys to the success of advanced energy‐storage devices. They fundamentally contribute to the safety, flexibility, energy/power density, and cycle life of a battery. With the development of advanced energy‐storage devices, electrolyte materials are facing great opportunities and challenges. From the views of battery structures and the roles of electrolytes, this review summarizes and discusses the up‐to‐date development of various forms of electrolytes, including liquid, solid, and gel electrolytes. Additionally, it emphasizes a comprehensive understanding of electrolyte properties, which are critical for the design of high‐performance electrolytes. Finally, possible solutions for high‐performance electrolytes are discussed.
