Al atoms are doped into Hf sites in HfO x nanoparticles supported on carbon black to incorporate O defects without decreasing the Hf valence. The oxygen reduction reaction activity is enhanced by the Al doping, and Al atoms are stable following the N doping into the O sites and accelerated degradation tests involving 20 000 potential cycles.
