Abstract This paper discusses the criteria for obtaining an improved performance of structured packing columns in gas‐liquid contacting, by improving the liquid and gas distributors. A new liquid distributor design, specific for structured packing columns is presented. Experimental measurements which quantify the improvements attained by the new distributor are also presented. Furthermore, gas flow distribution requirements for structured packing columns are discussed. Three “case studies” indicative of the implementation of the proposed distributor concept in industrial columns are included. Case (a) CO 2 /MEA removal column, case (b) ammonia splitter and case (c) acid gas neutralization column.
