Abstract An independent preliminary mechanistic prediction method for leakage rates through small slit‐shaped through‐wall cracks, based on coupled pressure drop and (critical) mass flux calculation is presented. The predictions are verified against initially subcooled liquid refrigerants and water data collected during experiments in real and model cracks in a wide range of parameters. The achieved accuracy of prediction is already comparable to that of the experimental results. Further model modifications are put forward.
