Emptying a bulk cargo silo produces dynamic processes which cannot completely be illustrated with the help of continuum mechanical calculations. The discrete elements method (DEM) can be applied to simulate the forces which act on inserts in silos during filling and discharging. For this simulation it is essential to calibrate the DEM. A new method for calibration of the simulation parameters is developed. The simulation correlates well with the experiments in a silo.
