To meet the given political targets, biofuels of the next generation are developed in parallel to the existing first biofuel generation. However, the question on which of the various biofuel options discussed (e.g., bioethanol, synthetic biofuels, biohydrogen, biogas, biomethane) could contribute to which extend within the transportation sector in the future is not completely answered yet. Therefore, in this paper, selected options to produce BtL‐fuels via thermo‐chemical gasification are analyzed and assessed by means of technical and economic criteria. Furthermore, based on these results, aspects related to market implementation are discussed.
