The Cu/ZnO/Al 2 O 3 catalyst prepared by the co‐precipitation method is employed in industrial large‐scale methanol synthesis. Although intensive research has already been carried out on this catalyst system, several attempts are still being made to improve it. The knowledge‐based approach provides the basis for a rational improvement of the well‐established catalyst systems for methanol synthesis.
