Petroleum feedstocks in refinery processes are complex mixtures of various types of hydrocarbon species. Innumerable reactions occur between species of the same or a different nature. A detailed kinetic description accounting for all individual reactions with separate rate parameters is an insurmountable task and, hence, appropriate assumptions have to be made in order to come to a manageable kinetic model.
