Porous media are frequently encountered in chemical engineering processes. A prime requirement for an optimized design of these processes is a careful characterization of the porous medium structure. Among the few experimental techniques that can be used to this end, image analysis of consolidated samples proves to be an efficient but seldom used tool. It is currently applied in the fields of geology and materials science. The aim of this paper is to enlighten different examples of diagnostic applications of image analysis in the field of chemical engineering.
