An artist's ideas about his drawing material, as well as about his subject, influence the forms in his picture. Each set of ideas modifies the other in an interactive process that determines the eventual configurations in his drawing. The interdependence of material and subject is particularly evident in the drawings of young children as the capacity for representation first emerges.
