The Midwest led the creation of the modern community college and public university, designed to support the advance of the industrial economy that grew to be centered in the region. In today's knowledge‐driven economy the role of learning and research institutions has changed dramatically. Looking forward, these institutions must change and contribute in new ways to the region's economic prosperity.
