Background This paper describes the implementation of Problem Solving Skills Training (PSST; McGuire, 1996), a structured, cognitive‐behavioural treatment programme, with mentally disordered offenders in a medium secure unit. PSST was chosen as the most appropriate cognitive‐behavioural groupwork programme to deliver in the secure unit based on a needs assessment. PSST also employs methods that not only teach offenders social problem‐solving skills, but also applies these skills to offence situations and offence‐related cognitions, attitudes and behaviours. Discussion Implementation issues are discussed and suggestions are made for how to overcome these problems when implementing future programmes. Copyright © 2001 Whurr Publishers Ltd.
