Background As part of a systematic search for literature on the epidemiology of mentally disordered offenders, academic papers published between 1989 and 1998 were identified which relate to the characteristics of patients in the four British special hospitals: Broadmoor, Rampton and Ashworth Hospitals in England and the state hospital at Carstairs in Scotland. Aims/Method This literature is analysed to provide summaries of findings on prevalence, demographic characteristics, legal categories, psychiatric diagnoses, offences, histories, behaviour within the special hospitals, security needs, and discharge records.
