The factor structure, reliability and validity of the Attribution of Blame Scale (ABS) were examined in a sample of 323 incarcerated violent offenders. Principal component analysis of the items resulted in a two‐factor solution of external and internal attribution in contrast with the original scales of victim, offender, alcohol, and societal blame. Measures of alcohol abuse, perception of external control and psychopathy corresponded with external attribution. The two‐factor structure of the ABS meets some basic psychometric properties for measuring criminal attributions within an offender population. Copyright © 1997 Whurr Publishers Ltd.
