As a medical student in my final year, I was recently left feeling defeated after witnessing the physical restraint of a child who was on a medical floor awaiting placement at a psychiatric facility. Throughout my pediatric‐related clinical experiences, I was full of questions and concerns: What could explain parents' reports of the violent actions of their 8‐year‐old, a well‐behaved star pupil at school? How were the parents of a 5‐year‐old girl potentially enabling her rigid preferences? What was behind a grandmother's contempt for her 3‐year‐old grandchild? What could I, a young male with no children of my own, possible have to offer to a struggling parent looking to me for advice on how to handle their child's meltdowns and defiance?
