Why does the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) care about perinatal — the period before and after a child's birth — depression? Because when the mother is depressed, the health of the baby — before and after birth — can be affected. This is one of the most common — and costly — obstetric complications in the United States, according to a report released in December by the AAP.
