Eating disorders are devastating psychiatric illnesses with potentially fatal medical consequences. Anorexia nervosa (AN) and related disorders (e.g., avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder) are characterized by a failure to make developmentally appropriate gains in body weight and restrictive eating behavior, with or without co‐occurring body image disturbance. Bulimia nervosa (BN) involves recurrent episodes of binge eating (i.e., eating a large amount of food accompanied by a sense of loss of control while eating) and compensatory behaviors (e.g., self‐induced vomiting, laxative abuse), along with body image disturbance. Collectively, these disorders affect at least 5@ of adolescents in the community, impede quality of life, and lead to increased mortality due to high rates of suicidality, self‐injurious behaviors, and physical health complications.
