With the release of the second season, controversy is again heating up about the Netflix TV show 13 Reasons Why . For those unfamiliar with the show, the storyline from season 1 addressed the circumstances surrounding the death by suicide of a 17‐year‐old girl. The show also covered topics such as depression, bullying (both cyber and in person), sexual assault, and substance use. The outcry surrounding the show was immediate and intense, with a split between those who felt the detail around these topics was excessive and might inspire suicide contagion and those that felt that it encouraged good discussion among parents, teens, and adults working with children and adolescents.
