Irritability is a common symptom of children who seek mental health services, but there is a lack of understanding about the relationship between pathophysiology and psychopathology of chronic or severe irritability, as well as the public health impact of the condition. Recently, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) convened a workshop on “Childhood Chronic Irritability and the Pathophysiology of Mental Illness” as a way to encourage research into the topic.
