Nonsuicidal self‐injury (NSSI) has a typical onset between ages 12 and 14 with a community prevalence of 13% to 28% among adolescents and 40% to 80% in psychiatric patients. Girls usually deliberately hurt themselves with cuts to their arms, legs, and abdomen; abrade their skin with erasers; or burn themselves with cigarettes. Boys use self‐harm less often and usually hit themselves, sometimes resulting in intentional fractures.
