Diverse optochemical and optobiological approaches are being developed and applied to the light‐regulation of cellular processes with exquisite spatial and temporal resolution in cells and multicellular model organisms. In this special issue, experts report some of the latest progress in the expanding field of the optical control of biological systems and present an overview of the state of the art of select approaches.
