The back cover picture shows an RNA‐cleaving DNAzyme that uses two Ca 2+ ions cooperatively to cleave its substrate in a highly efficient manner; the same enzyme can also use just one Mg 2+ ion, but in this case the cleavage rate is nearly 100 times slower. This represents the best DNA so far for recognizing Ca 2+ over Mg 2+ , its cooperative binding being reminiscent of calmodulin, a Ca 2+ binding protein.
