The inside cover picture shows that one NRPS cluster produces two unrelated classes of peptide. Two NRPS genes, surA and surD (red), for the cyclic octapeptides surugamides A–E are separated by two different NRPS genes, surB and surC (yellow). The latter genes are responsible for the biosynthesis of an unrelated linear decapeptide, surugamide F. The pattern of intercalation observed in the sur genes is unprecedented.
