The cover picture shows a “trapping” effect caused by introducing a unique d ‐lactate dehydrogenase into cellular metabolic networks. A “trapping point” is created by cooperation between an engineered high‐flux pathway, created by gene mining and using robust enzyme(s) from abundant genomic resources, and an irreversible step, such as introducing an efflux pump. This enables sustainable production without inhibition by the product(s). This discovery allows us to extend the use of the trapping effect to engineering complex metabolic networks for chemical production. Image by Xiaomeng Zhang (Shanghai Jiao Tong University).
