Two for the price of one : A series of small organic fluorescent probes based on 2-b-anilidovinyl-N-alkyl-heteroaromatic salts was prepared. These probes exhibit dual-fluorescence emission and the selective intracellular localization of some probes in mitochondria and lysosomes was demonstrated, enabling monitoring of mitochondria and lysosomes in living cells in one step.
