Bye‐bye, by‐product? It is shown that the mechanism of activation of the undesirable industrial by‐product 1 by a Rhodococcus species strain proceeds via a reactive dichloro vinyl ether 2 and subsequent formation of chloroacetone and 1‐chloropropan‐2‐ol. The hitherto unknown intermediate 2 was isolated, characterized by MS and NMR spectroscopy and chemically synthesized. The formation of a vinyl ether intermediate could represent a general microbial strategy for degrading ethers.
