A cationic gold( III ) porphyrin , [Au III (TMPyP)]Cl 5 ( 1 a ), is a potent HIV‐1 reverse transcriptase inhibitor in vitro with an IC 50 value=0.31 μ M . Effective inhibition (67 %) can be produced by the “ 1 a + AZT‐TP” protocol at nanomolar level. The gold( III ) complex exhibits remarkable stability in physiological buffer without significant cytotoxicity to normal T cells.
