Playing tag : The specific labeling of fusion proteins with small molecules in vivo (see figure, X represents the small molecule) offers the possibility of providing proteins with functions that can not be genetically encoded and may allow the use of a single fusion protein for a variety of different applications. In this Minireview, different approaches for achieving such in vivo labeling and their importance for functional genomics and proteomics are discussed.
