A Dipyrrino Cryptand — Synthesis, Crystal Structure, Metal Complexation The orange red cryptand 1 , containing a dipyrrin chromophore, has been synthesized in seven steps. Its C 2 ‐symmetrical X‐ray structure exhibits a planar dipyrrin unit and a twisted but not collapsed crown ring, two of the ether oxygen atoms projecting outwards. The complexation of alkali and transition metal cations by this concave dyestuff leads to changes of the color and to strong shifts in the UV/Vis spectra.
