Abstract Several optically active 1,2‐di‐ and 1,3,5‐trisubstituted benzene derivatives have been synthesized, in which one substituent is chiral, the others being methyl, ethyl, or neopentyl. The CD spectra within the α‐band can be explained well by making use of Platt and Petruska's q values. While introduction of OH at the benzylic position of a substituent inverts the direction of the corresponding electric transition moment vector in the plane of the ring, this has no such influence upon the magnetic transition moment perpendicular to the ring.
