1 H and 13 C NMR studies on magnesium anthracene ⋅ 3 THF ( 2a ), which can be recrystallized from THF, indicate that magnesium has the strongest interaction with the 9,10‐positions of anthracene. While the rate of formation of 2a from magnesium and anthracene in THF at 60°C is proportional to both anthracene concentration and magnesium surface area, at 25°C it is proportional only to magnesium surface area Magnesium, anthracene and THF exist in a temperature dependent, reversible equilibrium with 2a (eq. 6), the formation of 2a being favoured at lower temperatures. At higher temperatures 2a reacts with the solvent to produce ring opening of THF and insertion of butyleneoxy units in the Mg – C bonds, so that on hydrolysis the alcohols 6 and 7 are obtained.
