Photochemistry of Aromatic Nitro Compounds, XV. Photo‐yellowing of Musk Ambrette (4‐ tert ‐Butyl‐3‐methoxy‐2,6‐dinitrotoluene) in Methanolic Sodium Hydroxide Solution Photolysis (λ ≥ 280 nm) of musk ambrette ( 1 ) in 0.1 N methanolic sodium hydroxide solution gives rise ( via photoreduction) to the corresponding azoxybenzene 2 , which undergoes secondary photolysis to the hydroxyazobenzene 5 , and to the by‐products 3 and 4 via intramolecular photo‐cyclizations.
