Preparation and Some Reactions of cis , cis ‐2,4‐Di‐ tert ‐butylmuconic Anhydride cis , cis ‐2,4‐Di‐ tert ‐butylmuconic anhydride ( 1 ) was prepared by the Baeyer‐Villiger reaction from 3,5‐di‐ tert ‐butyl‐ o ‐benzoquinone with monoperphthalic acid in 76% yield. It is relatively stable against water and reacts with aqueous sodium hydroxide to give 2,4‐di‐ tert ‐butyl‐2,5‐dihydro‐5‐oxo‐2‐furanacetic acid ( 2 ), with methanol to form the corresponding ester 3 and with dry ammonia to yield the corresponding amide 4 . All compounds were characterized spectroscopically.
