A New Synthesis of 5‐Butyl‐2‐pyridinecarboxylic Acid (Fusaric Acid) Using the „Emmert Reaction” 3‐Butylpyridine ( 1 ) reacted with aliphatic ketones in the presence of amalgamated magnesium to yield the 5‐substituted 2‐pyridinemethanols 2a , b . Dehydration to 3a , b , followed by permanganate oxidation to 4 , and reaction with hypohalite gave 5‐butyl‐2‐pyridinecarboxylic acid ( 5 ).
