Bioassay‐guided fractionation of the whole plants of Saussurea deltoidea led to the isolation and structure elucidation of one new sesquiterpene, deltoidealactone ( 1 ), together with 23 known compounds 2 – 24 . Their structures were established on the basis of extensive 1D‐ and 2D‐NMR analyses in combination with HR‐MS experiments. Deltoidealactone ( 1 ) inhibits tumor necrosis factor (TNF‐ α ) production in U937 cells in vitro with an IC 50 value of 1.47 μg/ml.
