After California State University, Fresno announced in October 2020 that men's wrestling and tennis and women's lacrosse would be cut at the end of the 2020–2021 academic year, five members of the women's lacrosse team sued the school. They filed a Title IX lawsuit against Fresno State in U.S. District Court, Eastern District of California, along with a motion seeking a preliminary injunction barring the cut, as well as an order to compel Fresno State to treat the team fairly during the pending litigation. In April 2021, the court granted the motion in part and denied the motion in part.
