Despite the many unknowns surrounding the potential abundance of name, image, and likeness opportunities awaiting student‐athletes, athletics departments must not hesitate to take the lead in guiding excited student‐athletes as they embark on the uncharted NIL process. This means that athletics administrators should ensure their student‐athletes have access to critical education and screening resources, according to Courtney Altemus, CEO and Founder at TeamAltemus, which provides collegiate and professional athletes with practical expertise and guidance surrounding NIL issues. The failure to connect student‐athletes with crucial education and screening resources can leave them vulnerable to a host of financial and reputational damage, Altemus warned.
