ANAHEIM, Calif. — When faculty members don't support or understand the purpose and mission of the athletics department, the student‐athletes suffer in a myriad of ways. But it doesn't have to be that way. In fact, when a college athletics department establishes effective connections with faculty athletics representatives on campus, the benefits reach far and wide. But it's not easy to transform academic departments full of disinterested faculty members into supportive collaborators invested in helping student‐athletes succeed and thrive on and off the court and field. To help you do just that, David M. Szymanski, President of the University of North Florida, and a former FAR, shared his guidance as part of a panel at the NCAA's annual convention. The panel was hosted by Jo Hopp, FAR at the University of Wisconsin‐Stout, and President‐Elect of the Faculty Athletics Representative Association and member of the NCAA DIII FARs Advisory Group.
