For better or worse, fundraising has become an essential part of the operation of many college athletics departments. Although some schools have the benefit of significant revenue streams from TV and digital rights agreements, many other schools struggle on an annual basis to fully fund the necessary support and operations of each team. Other schools find themselves somewhere in the middle, reliant in large part on institutional support, while still needing to generate outside revenue to maintain the current level of the athletics program. Although corporate sponsorships and donor relationships usually become a mainstay of these efforts, many schools still rely on team‐ and coach‐based fundraising initiatives to reach certain monetary goals to support their respective programs.
