As concerns mount regarding the professionalization of collegiate sports and the treatment of student‐athletes, questions inevitably arise during the offseason about how and why sports became year‐round commitments. This development becomes all the more real when the possibility of a student‐athlete having a paid job or internship at home is replaced with the apparent need to remain at school and attend what many consider to be “organized” preseason workouts.
