A major challenge for community policing remains the successful interaction of law enforcement with constituents with mental health concerns. Too often, these clashes can end in outcomes — such as jail time or forced hospitalization — unsatisfactory to both parties. But with strong leadership, clear policies, and proper resources, these situations can be defused before they escalate.
