I think it may be time to take an honest, global assessment of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, known colloquially by most readers as “the Clery Act.” Before we begin, perhaps a clarification and some ground rules. First, this will be part one of a two‐part column dedicated to this topic. Second, I am a strong advocate for transparency in law enforcement. Third, I believe entirely in the use and validity of crime statistics, crime trends, and keeping accurate account (and reporting) of both. That said, I ask these three important questions.
