A recent study has concluded that states that require background checks before allowing a citizen to purchase a gun were around half as likely to have school shootings occur. The study, which was based on reports of school shootings between Jan. 1, 2013, and Dec. 31, 2015, found that the 17 states that required at least some form of mandatory background checks before purchasing a firearm were 45 percent less likely to experience a school shooting. In addition, states that required mandatory background checks before the purchase of ammunition were less likely to see school shootings.
