Amalia “Molly” Borja went to Long Beach Polytechnic High, which serviced kids bused in from Compton as well as those from affluent backgrounds. It had a reputation as an exceptionally rough school. “We had shootings on our campus,” Borja said, adding the violence was often motivated by warring gangs. “It was just normal for us. I would not have traded that experience for anything, because it really taught me how to get along with different groups of people.”
