This article presents a historical overview of Imagine Chicago—an approach to community development initiated by the author. Questions central to the original initiative are outlined, as are the major steps that were taken and why. The process involved generative dialogues between multiple community groups/interests described as ‘intergenerational’ learning communities. Appreciative Inquiry—an approach many regard as social constructionist—provided orienting principles and practices and the basis for practical projects in which participants developed organizing skills and worked on achievable outcomes.
