What is the process to be facilitated when citizens get the opportunity to make their voices heard in the debate on biotechnology? We observed the challenges citizens take up when participating in a ‘Consensus Conference’ on Genetic Testing and analysed the ambivalences of the learning process. Facilitators, not only should guide the interaction process, but also should support the substance of the process, that is an interaction between personal stories of citizens, the questions that spring from it and the knowledge of experts.
