Abstract The Bene–Anthony Family Relations Test is a potentially valuable clinical technique in the assessment of young children suspected of having been abused. Fourteen supplementary cards have been developed which offer the possibility of a narrow investigative focus, as their content points more directly to abusive behaviour. Used carefully, it is considered that these cards, within the context of the Family Relations Test, provide a young child with a non‐threatening, non‐directive and age‐appropriate context within which to relate their experiences.
