(2002) point out thatpersistent crying in infants could lead to problems of interactionbetween parent and child. St James-Roberts (2007) suggests thatinfant crying is a common concern for parents that may triggerinfant abuse and Barr (2003) indicated that exasperated parentsmay resort to shaking a crying infant. Literature specic to studiesregarding shaken baby syndrome indicates that crying is frequentlya trigger factor (Wyszynski, 1999; Devins, 2003). The aim of thisstudy was to describe mothers’ opinions of the crying behaviour ofinfants under one year of age to establish some baseline informa-tion that could be utilised in the design of preventative programmesand parent education.
