T he increased wave of student activism has forced colleges and universities to tackle a variety of social, legal, and communication challenges. Student‐athletes have played significant roles in marches and demonstrations; boycotts of practices and donor events; and demands to rename buildings, ban fight songs, remove campus monuments, and discipline coaching staff, noted Michael R. Phillips, Partner at McGuireWoods LLP. “These movements have sometimes seemed very sudden, very out of the blue, but in fact they're a continuation of legal battles that have been ongoing for many years in college sports in which student‐athletes have tried to reshape the power dynamics of college sports,” he said.
