Haley Videckis and Layana White were members of the Pepperdine University women's basketball team, and Ryan Weisenberg was the team's head coach. Videckis and White were in a dating relationship while they were on the basketball team. They sued Pepperdine, alleging they were subjected to intrusive and discriminatory actions, and that Weisenberg and his staff harassed them in an effort to force them to quit the team because of their lesbian relationship.
